The need for faster diagnostics
It's difficult to imagine the psychological impact of an elevated PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test result. To help support our members, we now offer the choice of a prostate cancer referral service where members can access a consultant urologist quickly for diagnostics.
- If you are aged 40+ and have received an elevated PSA blood test, simply call your Cigna Helpline to self-refer. If appropriate, you’ll be transferred to ProstateHealth UK and referred to a consultant urologist. The referral is typically within 5 working days of your call to Cigna.
- At your appointment, as appropriate, you’ll have the appropriate diagnostics including multiparametric MRI (mpMRI). This helps determine if you might need a prostate biopsy and to target the biopsy to the exact location. There is strong clinical evidence that this will reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.
- Should you have an elevated PSA but normal mpMRI, you could be further investigated as part of a follow up programme.
- If onward referral to a specialist is required remember to always call Cigna for pre-authorisation first.
