Acute condition examples

Example 1:

John suffered a sudden onset of upper abdominal pain. Following investigations he was found to have gallstones. He had to undergo an operation to remove his gallbladder to prevent a re-occurrence of this condition. John’s surgery took place without any complications.

Cigna’s response: The Cigna PMI plan covered John’s surgery up to the limit.

Example 2:

Graham found a lump in his groin which his GP diagnosed as an inguinal hernia. He was referred to a specialist for review. The specialist recommended a day case laparoscopic procedure to repair this hernia, which was carried out without any complications.

Cigna’s response: The Cigna plan covered Graham’s surgery up to the limit listed in the fee schedule, plus two post-operative follow-up consultations.

Example 3:

Mary was pregnant with her first child. She had kept well throughout her pregnancy but in her 38th week the baby was found to be lying in a breech presentation. Her consultant recommended an elective caesarean section. This was carried out and Mary delivered a healthy baby girl.

Cigna’s response: Breech presentation is considered a complication of pregnancy which needs surgical intervention. The Cigna PMI plan covered Mary’s surgery up to the limits listed in the fee schedule, plus one post-operative follow-up consultation for Mary.

Example 4:

Jane had suffered from hip pain for many years. The pain had progressively increased and her mobility had been quite seriously affected in recent months. Jane was seen by a specialist who recommended a hip replacement. This was carried out without complication and Jane continued to be reviewed by her consultant on a regular basis over a 12 month period.

Cigna’s response: Cigna covered Jane’s surgery up to the limit listed in her fee schedule. Her physiotherapy was also covered for a three month period and her specialist consultations were covered for up to 12 months to assist her recovery.

Example 5:

Jim has been suffering from a sore ear for some time. His GP felt that this was coming from his teeth. The local dentist carried out a full oral review and told Jim that his wisdom teeth were deeply impacted and this was causing nerve pain. He was referred to an oral surgeon to have the teeth removed under a general anaesthetic.

Cigna’s response: The Cigna plan covered this surgery up to the limit listed in his fee schedule, as well as one follow-up consultation.
